History
The Zárate Plant opened in 1956 as a polystyrene operation, being the first Monsanto facility in Latin America. Several styrenic polymers such as PS (polystyrene), SAN (styrene acrilonitrile), ABS (acrilonitrile butadiene styrene), and other chemical products (PVC, Santoflex, etc) were made in the following decades. In 1982 the first batch of Roundup® herbicide was produced, initiating Monsanto’s agricultural chemical operations in Latin America South. In 1987, the first glyphosate unit was started up with the original sulfuric process that was run until 1992.

In 1996, the acetochlor formulation unit was started up with Harness® and Guardian® herbicides, and in 1998 Flusol herbicide (fluorochloridone-based) was incorporated to this unit. In 1996, the Blending & Packaging operation for NutraSweet brand sweetener was launched, incorporating liquid sweetener formulations in 1997. In 1997, the Plastics business was divested and sold to Unistar (including the manufacturing operation) and the Zárate Plant became an agrichemical facility. In March, 2000, the business for NutraSweet was sold to Merisant. Roundup®, Harness® and Guardian® are registered trademarks of Monsanto Technology.

In 2000 Zarate Plant inaugurated its expansion on gliphosate production achieving a capacity of 31.7 MREGS. At this same year, with investments on the back end, the Zarate Gliphosate Plant became the Monsanto largest facility in Latin America. In 2001 the Zarate Plant expanded the DRY Unit capacity up to 13.8 MREGS. In 2003 Monsanto Argentina launched Roundup Full® based on a KOH salt formulation, and introduced a more concentrated KOH salt formulation in 2004. In 2005 Monsanto Argentina launched Roundup Amonio, replacing Roundup CLASSIC®, and Roundup Ultramax a premium dry formulation. Both new products are based on ammonium salt formulations.
