Monsanto Hawaii Employees Donate Bikes for Maui’s Tykes

(December 30, 2007) - Employees of Monsanto Hawaii donated 40 bicycles along with helmets and safety information for children 12 and under, and 9 gift cards for teens to Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Maui at the nonprofit organization’s holiday party held this month.

The bikes were purchased through contributions made by Monsanto employees, who also transported, assembled and delivered the gifts to children serviced by Big Brothers-Big Sisters.

The “bikes for tykes” project was organized over a four-month period by a volunteer employee committee and ultimately involved contributions from several hundred Monsanto employees.

“It really warmed our hearts to see the children receive their gifts,” said Melody Stuart, one of Monsanto’s volunteer committee members. “One little girl was so excited she asked me to show her the name tags on the bikes to make sure one was for her. Her smile when receiving her new bike is still on my mind and that was the best Christmas present I received this year.”

Last year, Monsanto’s employees participated in the Lokahi Tree project on Maui by donating a 44 lb bag filled with gifts for children. They also offered their assistance to Habitat for Humanity.

“It is this spirit of giving that we want to make an annual tradition,” said Rebecca Ryan of Monsanto Hawaii. “To have the opportunity to give back to our community in which we live and work is an experience that brings us all together and that’s what the holidays are all about.”
